Also known as Piazza Grande, it was built in 1806 by Elisa Baciocchi Bonaparte. Its construction caused the demolition of four town's blocks, which included also the Torre del Palazzo, the Chiesa di San Pietro maggiore and the public Archivio. The solution was carried out to give the opposite Palazzo Ducale the light and the space required by its importance but it provoked the strong and ineffective opposition of the citizens.
